The question is asked, does John 20 : 19 put any sanctity ( holiness ) on the 1st day of the week, the day we now call, Sunday? A careful reading of the text in the King James Version of the Bible will show the words ” for fear of the Jews.” The disciples were assembled behind shut doors because, now that the Sabbath had expired and the first day of the week had arrived, they were fearful for their own life. This scripture in no way places any sacredness upon the first day of the week ( Sunday ). If we will remember that the inspired writings of the new testament scriptures were not written until 20, 30, and more years after the cross of Calvary, we will see clearly that the 1st day of the week was still called by its common, irreligious distinction ” the first day of the week “, one of the six working days, as Ezekiel 46 : 1 KJV reveals. If the first day of the week had become a new holy day, surely there would have been something in this scripture as it was most likely written near the close of the 1st century, 60 or more years after the cross. Because John 20 : 19, would be thought to transfer the solemnity of God’s holy seventh – day Sabbath to the first day of the week, it surely shows how missing is the proof in favor of Sunday.
